REPORT FROM GERMANY'S ABBA MANIA RECORDING -
Posted at 6:58 PM
Here's my report about the TV show "ABBA Mania" that was taped last night for RTL in Potsdam near Berlin. It's the fourth "Mania" show after Grease Mania, Dirty Dancing Mania and Elvis Mania. The show was hosted by Barbara Schöneberger and Dirk Bach (who also sang two duets each) and it was quite funny and entertaining. The show presented Germany's 20 most favorite ABBA songs (voted on the internet) but only 16 of them were performed. The last Mania shows presented mostly local RTL stars, but this time they managed to gather an interesting mix of artists. See for yourself!
Here is the run down of the songs, starting with number 20 down to number 1. I can clearly remember number 20 and 19, and 3, 2 and 1, but I am not sure about the positions in between.
#20 Waterloo - Banaroo (teenie band, two guys and two girls)
#19 Money Money Money - Mariella Ahrens (actress; the best choreography of the night which was inspired by Madonna's Material Girl)
#18 I Have A Dream - Barbara Schöneberger & Sidney Youngblood (haven't heard from him in 15 years!)
#17 Lay All Your Love On Me - no performance
#16 Voulez-Vous - Abbamania (cast from the London show that's touring through Germany; they look like Bjorn Again)
#15 Does Your Mother Know - ? & ? (two guys from the daily soap show "Unter uns")
#14 S.O.S. - Michelle Huntzinger (TV host, e.g. Pop Idol)
#13 Knowing Me Knowing You - Right Said Fred
#12 Mamma Mia - Kate Hall (probably the original A*Teens' backing track, but with a very good voice)
#11 Honey Honey - no performance
#10 So Long - no performance
#9 Gimme Gimme Gimme - Doro Pesch & Dirk Bach (she's Germany's heavy metal queen, ex Warlock front singer)
#8 The Winner Takes It All - Samantha Fox
#7 The Name Of The Game - Sidney Youngblood
#6 Take A Chance On Me - no performance
#5 Super Trouper - Max Raabe & Palast Orchester (in 1920's style, it was released in 2000 already)
#4 Chiquitita - Lucy (ex No Angels)
#3 One Of Us - US5 (boy band from US/UK/Germany)
#2 Fernando - Barbara Schöneberger & Dirk Bach
#1 Dancing Queen - Belinda Carlisle
#finale : Thank You For The Music - Abbamania Cast with all the other artists
Between the songs they showed short clips from the various official DVDs (promoting "The Movie") and made a lot of fun of the clothes and hair styles and got some little facts wrong.
Most interesting bit : a part of the commercial for Gard hair care products from the early 80s that used "Move On" with German words.
The show will be broadcast in November. If you watch it, you probably cannot miss me, I was sitting in the second row right in front of the stage.
There will be a CD with the songs from the show. Hightlighs for me were Knowing Me Knowing You, Name Of The Game (interesting versions) and Belinda Carlisle (great voice as ever, but neither the arrangement nor her outfit nor performance were very outstanding, but I was so happy to see her in person after all those years).
And I had a great weekend in Berlin with friends!
